Andreas Bennetzen was trained as a classical musician at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, with soloist class debut in 2003.
With a background in jazz from Bernadotte School and Aurehøj Gymnasium and a home where they listened to soul, hip-hop and reggae, Andreas Bennetzen is a many-facetted and popular musician who can both record with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and the hip-hop rockers in Revoltage.
Andreas plays and records with the Royal Danish Orchestra, DR’s permanent ensembles, Efterklang, Clemens, Keld Heick, Johnny Stage, Revoltage, Poeten og Lillebror, Salem, Karl Bille, Claus Hempler, Martin Hall, Pharfar, Glamorama and Bjørn Svin, among others.
Andreas is especially interested in electronic and improvised music, performance, and the interaction between improvised music, contact improvisation and interactive art. This has led to cooperative ventures with Pivot Performance, Ture Larsen and Copenhagen Art Ensemble, composer Kuno Kjærbye, choreographer Steen Koerner, Pipaluk Supernova, Karl Gillick (San Francisco, Supperclub), Gregers Kirkegaard(ISW) and Helle Fuglsang.
Andreas is a member of the artist group Halfmachine and co-owner of MS Halfmachine, where he functions as house composer, music coordinator and performance coordinator. In May 2008, he was responsible for launching the world’s largest u-boat built by amateurs, the UC3 Nautilus, an event that is documented in a film about the u-boat and its builder, Peter Madsen, for National Geographic channel (www.halfmachine.dk).
With Hélianne Blais, Andreas has founded Purple Strings, which is one of Denmark’s only string ensembles specializing in rhythmic music.
Since 2007, Andreas has been connected with Næstved’s new local theatre, Det Lille Turnéteater, in its performance of “Hamlet”, which is on international tour.
He has received many grants, both for himself and for projects he has led. He has composed works for his own bands and ensembles and had works commissioned such as “Turn Back Time” for Biografkoncerten, “As Days go By” for Langvad Chamber Music Days, and “On One for All” for Bassissimo 2005, which was originally performed on Danish Radio. He was chairman for Danish Bass Society from 2000 to 2006.
He was artistic leader of Bassissimo 2005 and founder of Minibassissimo for children and young people.
